DEFINITIONS

ATHEISM - Atheism is in the broadest sense an absence of belief in the existence of deities. Less broadly, Atheism is a rejection of the belief that any deities exist. In an even narrower sense, Atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Generally Atheism is a denial of god or gods, and if religion is defined in terms of belief in spiritual beings, then atheism is the rejection of all religious belief.

AGNOSTICISM - Agnosticism is the view that the existence of god, of the divine or the supernatural is unknown or unknowable. Another definition is the view that human reason is incapable of providing sufficient rational grounds to justify either the belief that god exists or the belief that god does not exist. An Agnostic is a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (such as god) is unknown and probably unknowable broadly. An Agnostic is one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of a god.

HUMANISM - Humanism is a philosophical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively. Generally, humanism refers to a perspective that affirms some notion of human freedom and progress. It views humans as solely responsible for the promotion and development of individuals and emphasizes a concern for humans in relation to the world. In modern times, humanist movements are typically non-religious movements aligned with secularism, and today humanism may refer to a non-theistic life stance centered on human agency and looking to science rather than revelation from a supernatural source to understand the world. A Humanist is a person having a strong interest in or concern for human welfare, values, and dignity. Humanistic thinking encourages us to think more from the perspective of: what we want than what we don't want; what works than what doesn't; assets and human potential than deficits and constraints.

SECULARISM - Secularism is the separation of religion from civic affairs and the state. It may connote anticlericalism, atheism, naturalism, and banishment of religious symbols from the public sphere. As a philosophy, Secularism seeks to interpret life on principles taken solely from the material world, without recourse to religion. It shifts the focus from religion towards temporal and material concerns. In political terms, secularism is the principle of the separation of government institutions and persons mandated to represent the state from religious institutions and religious dignitaries.

SKEPTICISM - Skepticism is an attitude of doubt or a disposition to incredulity either in general or toward a particular object. It is the doctrine that true knowledge or knowledge in a particular area is uncertain. It is the method of suspended judgment and systematic doubt. Skepticism is generally a questioning attitude or doubt towards one or more accepted instances of knowledge which are asserted to be mere belief or dogma. Formally, skepticism is a topic of interest in philosophy, particularly epistemology. More informally, skepticism as an expression of questioning or doubt can be applied to any topic, such as politics, religion, or pseudoscience. It is often related to doubt about the existence of god or the supernatural. Philosophical skepticism denies that knowledge or rational belief is possible and urges us to suspend judgment on many or all controversial matters. More moderate forms of philosophical skepticism claim only that nothing can be known with certainty, or that we can know little or nothing about non-empirical matters, such as whether god exists, whether human beings have free will, or whether there is an afterlife. Scientific skepticism advocates for testing beliefs for reliability, by subjecting them to systematic investigation using the scientific method, to discover empirical evidence for them.

FREE THOUGHT - Free thought  is an epistemological viewpoint which holds that beliefs should not be formed on the basis of authority, tradition, revelation, or dogma, and that beliefs should instead be reached by other methods such as logic, reason, and empirical observation. A Free·Thinker is a person who forms their own ideas and opinions rather than accepting those of other people, especially in religious teaching. Free Thought is strongly tied with rejection of traditional social or religious belief systems. Freethinking is most closely linked with secularism, atheism, agnosticism, humanism, anti-clericalism, and religious critique. It is the free exercise of reason in matters of religious belief, unrestrained by deference to authority. Freethinkers hold that knowledge should be grounded in facts, scientific inquiry, and logic. The skeptical application of science implies freedom from the intellectually limiting effects of confirmation bias, cognitive bias, conventional wisdom, popular culture, urban myth, prejudice, or sectarianism. Free Thought can also be defined as thinking which is independent of revelation, tradition, established belief, and authority, and embraces a range of unorthodoxy, religious dissent, skepticism, and unconventional thinking.

SCIENCE NOTES

"Atheism is the denial of the existence of any supernatural being by accepting the basic scientific truth."

-Rajendra Chaudhari

“The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but blind pitiless indifference.”
-Richard Dawkins

“We talk about the Internet. That comes from science. Weather forecasting. That comes from science. The main idea in all of biology is evolution. To not teach it to our young people is wrong.”
-Bill Nye

"A lie doesn't become truth, wrong doesn't become right, and evil doesn't become good, just because it's accepted by a majority."
-Booker T. Washington

"Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."
-Aldous Huxley

"We have fought long and hard to escape from medieval superstition. I, for one, do not wish to go back."
James Randi

“I simply go with what works. And what works is the healthy skepticism embodied in the scientific method. Believe me, if the bible had ever been shown to be a rich source of scientific answers and enlightenment, we would be mining it daily for cosmic discovery.”
-Neil DeGrasse Tyson

“The evidence of evolution pours in, not only from geology, paleontology, biogeography, and anatomy (Darwin's chief sources), but from molecular biology and every other branch of the life sciences. To put it bluntly but fairly, anyone today who doubts that the variety of life on this planet was produced by a process of evolution is simply ignorant -- inexcusably ignorant, in today’s world. Doubts about the power of Darwin's idea of natural selection to explain this evolutionary process are still intellectually respectable, however, although the burden of proof for such skepticism has become immense.”
-Daniel Dennett

“The concept of intelligent design encourages us to stop looking for answers. It would have us steer in the opposite direction of scientific curiosity. How can anyone suggest that science will never come up with a natural explanation for something, for anything? Shouldn’t we work the problems a bit more before giving up? Shouldn’t we have more faith in the power of science and of the human mind?”
-Guy Harrison

“Science is expanding, and with it our vision of the universe. Although this new and constantly changing view may not always give us comfort, it does have the virtue of truth according to our most effective resources for acquiring knowledge. No philosophy, moral outlook, or religion can be inconsistent with the findings of science and hope to endure among educated people.”
-Heinz R. Pagels

“No one is in charge. And honestly, that’s even cooler. The idea of an ordered and elegant universe is a lovely one. One worth clinging to. But you don’t need religion to appreciate the ordered existence. It’s not just an idea, it’s reality. We’re discovering the hidden orders of the universe every day. The inverse square law of gravitation is amazing. Fractals. The theory of relativity. The genome. These are magnificently beautiful concepts.”
-Adam Savage & Jamie Hyneman
